Embattled White House lurches from crisis to crisis

"We need to have all the facts, and it is appropriate for the House Oversight Committee to request this memo", said Ryan spokesperson AshLee Strong.

Even before disclosure of the memo, key Republicans were showing fatigue with the president's political problems.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster said Trump did not know the source of the information he disclosed to the Russians.

Comey was abruptly fired at a time when he was leading an investigation into whether Trump's election campaign had links with Russia's alleged interference in the USA polls. Trump himself said he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russian Federation. Yet U.S. allies and some members of Congress have expressed alarm.

Republicans and Democrats alike were eager to hear from Comey, who has increasingly emerged as a central figure in the unfolding drama.

The Senate intelligence committee on Wednesday asked Comey to appear before the panel in both open and closed sessions.

The White House quickly denied any suggestion that Trump was trying to obstruct justice - a criminal offence - in his dealings with Comey.

While espionage stories and staff chaos have dominated coverage of the White House in recent weeks, Trump faces a more constant, background hazard of failing to deliver on domestic promises such as healthcare reform.

Moscow's top diplomat, Lavrov represents Russian foreign policies that are often sharply at odds with USA aims in Syria and Europe.

There is no other explanation for this maneuver; its timing, its politics, its optics, its reflection of the current investigation into his campaign's role in Russia's meddling in our national electoral process, or the eventual handling of the announcement. But the swirling questions about his conduct were clearly on his mind when he told graduates at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in CT that "no politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly".

"He's around and the best evidence of what happened in that meeting would be to call him as a witness", said Barbara McQuade, former USA attorney for the Eastern District of MI. I guess that's why we won.

A bombshell memo written by fired FBI Director James Comey alleges Donald Trump tried to shut down the investigation into his former National Security Adviser, General Michael Flynn.

The President told Comey that Flynn, who was sacked for lying to Pence about the content of his telephone conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak before the inauguration, hadn't done anything wrong.

The New York Times cited a memo Mr Comey wrote following his meeting in the Oval Office with Mr Trump on 14 February - a day after Mr Flynn stepped down.

John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said late Tuesday that the developments had reached "Watergate size and scale".

Sure, Trump will still be almost impossible to manage no matter how the White House is organized.

The person who described the Comey memo to the AP was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I hope you can let this go", the president told Mr. Comey, according to the memo, revealead first by the New York Times.

A combination photo shows US President Donald Trump (L) in the House of Representatives in Washington, US, on February 28, 2017 and FBI Director James Comey in Washington, US on July 7, 2016.

A day earlier, The Washington Post also published a report which alleged that Trump shared "highly classified" information with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak during a White House meeting last week.

"He really needs a lawyer", Ms O'Sullivan said of Mr Trump. "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr Comey". "I'm not going to take a memo, I want the guy to come in".

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go", Trump is accused of telling Comey, according to a memo written by the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief, who was sacked last week.

Trump later admitted in a television interview about Comey's firing that he was bothered by "this Russian Federation thing" and said he would have fired Comey regardless of the Justice Department recommendation.
