Daniel Ricciardo wins for Red Bull in China

Daniel Ricciardo admits his triumph at the Chinese Grand Prix was something of a surprise after grabbing his first race win of the season.

The Australian started from the third row, but took advantage when the safety auto came out on the 31st lap to allow him to get fresh, soft tires when the other leaders were running on worn rubber and couldn't get in quickly to change. Ricciardo took the lead with just 10 laps to go when he charged past race Valtteri Bottas, who finished second in a Mercedes. "They're all pretty fun", said an elated Ricciardo, who filled one of his shoes with champagne on the podium and chugged it in a signature "shoey" victory celebration.

Bottas called it a "fair" pass and finished second with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen in third.

Red Bull pit wall management masterfully pitted Mr. Ricciardo during the safety vehicle, giving their driver the advantage of fresh tires in the bunched up field. And he knew he got a bit lucky.

"It is disappointing. We gave it everything we had", said Bottas. At that point I knew that we had a auto to win and I wasn't going to be satisfied until I was in the lead.

"Holy Testicle Tuesday", the 28-year-old exclaimed when asked what his reaction would have been had someone suggested in winter testing that Red Bull would win a race before champions Mercedes this season. There's no clear favorite and plenty of questions. He led for the first 20 laps but fell back, first due to a pit stop and then after a collision with Red Bull's Max Verstappen on the 43rd lap.

Vettel led the race in the opening stages but was jumped by Bottas at the first round of pitstops. Hamilton, the four-time and defending champion, improved his season points total to 45. The German quickly built up a lead of 2.5 seconds over Bottas, with Max Verstappen close behind in third, the Dutchman having made up two places thanks to the extra grip of his softer compound tires. They barely made it, with mechanics seen snapping pieces of the car's body back into place with about a minute to spare. Hamilton gained two places but immediately lost one as he had to go wide around the stricken Ferrari and Red Bull, while Raikkonen went down the inside of them and passed the Mercedes. "Just depending on the conditions and whoever gets the tires and the set up right". Lewis Hamilton dropped back to fifth, as the first portion of the race passed without much incident.

"The safety vehicle was so unlucky for us", exclaimed Bottas over the radio. "It kind of felt like we deserved a victory, but not today". Having brought both cars in for medium tyres at the same time earlier in the race, and pulled it off, they boldly did the same thing again this time while the field was running slowly, switching them from mediums to the faster softs.

Renault's Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth for Renault, ahead of Alonso whose aggressive overtaking move on Vettel was "noted" by stewards. Vettel, Carlos Sainz of Renault and Haas' Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10.

What a difference a week makes.

"This sport's insane", he said. "Frustrated at the sport, frustrated at all the variables involved in the sport", Ricciardo said.

"Sometimes you've just got to lick the stamp and send it", he added of the lunge on Hamilton for third place. "But then you have a day like this it's worth all those bad ones".
