Rafael Nadal Opens Up On Injury Absence And Davis Cup Return

Spain are now on the brink of being eliminated in the Davis Cup World Group quarter-finals as Germany have a 2-1 lead.

Having returned from injury in style on Friday to set a record for the most Davis Cup singles matches won in a row in a straightforward 6-2 6-2 6-3 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber, Nadal was expected to be pushed harder when trying to recover a 2-1 deficit against the Germans.

Nadal and the local crowd erupted in celebration when the 33rd-ranked Ferrer successfully served for the match after breaking Kohlschreiber's serve in the previous game.

It mattered little, however, as Nadal's thumping forehand secured a two-set lead and after the pair traded breaks at the start of the third, the home favourite moved through the gears and broke for 4-2 as Kohlschreiber went wide and then netted.

"Here I am very excited to try to help the team to be in the semi-finals", he added looking forward to the upcoming Davis Cup quarter-finals between Spain and Germany.

Rafael Nadal faces a huge Davis Cup appearance this weekend as he returns for his first appearance in competition since limping out of the Australian Open in January against Marin Cilic with a hip injury.

Spain's Davis Cup home ties are going to be played on the clay court and those can be a fine practice for Nadal ahead of the ATP Clay season, which will begin just after the Davis Cup matches.

With the doubles coming up tomorrow, Nadal has a break before his scheduled - and potentially crucial - singles match against Zverev, which will be followed by a final singles match between Ferrer and Kohlschreiber.

Holders France went 1-0 up against Italy after Lucas Pouille overpowered Andreas Seppi 6-3 6-2 4-6 3-6 6-1. "We got a bit lucky but it feels great".

Miami Open champion John Isner smashed 43 aces to overcome a surprisingly stiff challenge from world No. 319 Joris de Loore to win the United States' first point with a 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 victory in a match that lasted over three hours.

The heavily-favored USA team took a 2-0 lead against a depleted Belgium side on the indoor hard courts in Nashville, Tenn., to come within a point of its first Davis Cup semifinals in six years.
