1 critically injured in fire at Trump Tower in NY

A man's died after a blaze on the 50th floor of Trump Tower in Manhattan.

New York City in 1999 ended up being last huge city in the country to need sprinklers, inning accordance with the New york city Daily News.

During Saturday's press briefing, Nigro also revealed that six of his firefighters suffered non-fatal injuries during the operation.

Trump, in a tweet, thanked firefighters and said the blaze was "very confined" citing a "well built building".

The fire, which injured four firefighters, was under control by approximately 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the Post. At the time the building was constructed, the city didn't require every unit have sprinklers, so this unit didn't have one.

Firefighters who entered his apartment to extinguish the flames reported the place was "virtually entirely on fire".

Water pours from the window of a fire damaged apartment in Trump Tower Saturday, April 7, 2018, in NY. Before moving to the White House, Mr. Trump, the first lady and Barron Trump lived in the triplex penthouse apartment, which occupies sections of floors 56-58, according to Forbes.

NY fire commissioner Donald Nigro said the 50th floor apartment was "virtually entirely on fire".

Fire sprinklers were not required in New York City highrises when Trump Tower was completed in 1983. "As you can imagine, the apartment is quite large". Instead, Trump talked about the success of the building's construction.

The cause of the fire is unclear.

"The structure sure stood rather well", Nigro stated.

Two people were injured in the fire that officials said may have been caused by electrical heaters inside the cooling tower.

Early talks for the proposed bill suggested that all residential buildings be required to install sprinklers, which irked developers, including Trump.

Multiple street closures slowed foot and vehicle traffic surrounding the tower, from East 55th Street to East 57th Street from Fifth Avenue to Madison Avenue, according to officials.
