U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin speaks in the White House briefing room in Washington on April 26, 2017.

The sanctions could potentially hurt the Russianeconomy, especially the financial and energy sectors, and are part of Washington's effort to hold Russia to account for allegedly interfering in the election, which Moscow denies.
"American democracy is clearly degrading", the ministry said. Assets of those targeted in the United States have been blocked, and all USA -based entities are forbidden from doing business with them.
These entities have been punished for their "malign activity around the world", the US Treasury Department said.
