London murder rate beats NY as stabbings surge

The incidents follow a spike in violence in London in recent weeks which saw more murders committed in the capital in February and March than there were in NY.

Acting detective chief inspector Glenn Butler, from the Trident and Area Crime Command, said: "I fully appreciate the alarm, shock and revulsion caused by this murder and other fatal shootings we have seen across London over the last few months".

"The Mayor is deeply concerned by violent crime in the capital - every life lost to violent crime is a tragedy", a spokeswoman for Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement on Tuesday.

Police were called to Chalgrove Road, Tottenham, at about 21:35 BST on Monday to reports of a shooting.

London is struggling to deal with a surge in violent crime that has made the British capital's streets more unsafe than those of NY.

A BBC editorial cautioned that the two-month spike might just be a statistically anomalous "blip" that looks large due to having a small sample size of only two months, and pointed out that London has only had 47 murders this year so far compared to 50 in New York City.

While the cities have similar populations of about 8.7 and 8.6 million respectively, the same Sunday Times report cites that London's crime rate has risen by 38 percent since 2014, excluding those killed in terrorist attacks.

"Our city remains one of the safest in the world. but Sadiq wants it to be even safer and is working hard to bring an end to this violent scourge".

Separately, in Walthamstow, a 16-year-old boy was found suffering from gunshot injuries.

Larry Logan, a former police superintendent in east London, told AFP the city is facing "a ideal storm" of reduced police numbers and "decimated" social services due to funding cuts. Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy said the 16-year-old had been shot in the face.

She noted an order allowing police to search members of the public without suspicion amid the risk of violence had been put in place in the area.

There are extra police on the streets of Walthamstow and officers said they are using stop-and-search powers to seize weapons.

The boy's death took the capital's murder toll for the year so far to 48 in little over three months.

'As a community, we can all help to tackle the problem of violent crime.

'Social media certainly does have a part to play in whipping up the violence on the streets that we are seeing at the moment'.

A Home Office spokesperson said: "Gangs often post videos online that seek to incite violence or glamorise criminality to influence young people".

Her mother laid flowers at the scene yesterday, with a card signed "Love Mummy" and reading: "To my baby Nesha". "I'm sure it does rev people up".

Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said on Tuesday: "there can be no place in our society for violent crime. The government is determined to do everything it can to break the cycle".
