4 killed in Marine helicopter crash

A Marine helicopter crashed Tuesday in Southern California and authorities believe all four crew members were killed.

The Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter from 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing cashed near El Centro at 2.35pm local time on Tuesday. Reports stated all four crew members on board were presumed dead.

The wreck is the deadliest Marine accident since a cargo plane crash in the Mississippi Delta that killed 16 Marines in July, 2017.

The Marine Corps CH 53E Super Stallion helicopter allegedly belonged into the Three Marine Aircraft Wing in Hillcrest. The crew members haven't been identified. The situation on the ground is changing as new information becomes available.

Also on April 3, a Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier crashed during takeoff from Djibouti Ambouli International Airport around 4 p.m. local time, a spokesman for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command said.

Kristopher Haugh, with Naf El Centro Pao said, "Throughout our history, there have been mishaps around here".

Tuesday's helicopter incident is not the first over United States territory this year.

According to Military.com the CH-53E Super Stallion is the Marine Corps' primary heavy lift helicopter and has been in service for over 30 years.

Other crashes involving CH-53E helicopters include an incident last October in Okinawa, but there were no injuries, the AP reported.
