Michael Bennett Surrenders To Face Felony Charge

Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Michael Bennett will reportedly turn himself in to police Monday, an attorney for Bennett told USA Today.

Bennett allegedly injured a 66-year-old paraplegic person who was controlling access to the field at Super Bowl LI in Houston, where the Patriots beat the Falcons on February 6, 2017. Bennett was a spectator watching his brother Martellus play for the Patriots.

While Eagles vice president Howie Roseman was discussing the third-degree felony charge against defensive end Michael Bennett with reporters Monday at the NFL Meetings in Orlando, Bennett was in the process of posting $10,000 bail in Houston.

If convicted, the charge carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The Houston Police Department says one of their officers witnessed Bennett push 3 stadium employees - including the woman in the wheelchair.

Acevedo said there is no video of the alleged incident.

"Mr. Bennett forcibly opened the locked doors (of tunnels leading to the field) even though security stated he did not have access to the tunnels to get to the field", Chief Art Acevado said.

Hardin said Bennett will remain in the Houston area for a few days, visiting family.

From the courthouse, Hardin took issue with Acevedo's words.

Roseman said Monday the team did not know about an investigation into Bennett when they made a trade to acquire him from the Seahawks earlier this month.

"In this country, people are presumed innocent, and I think we have to be fair about that in all these matters", Roseman said.

"In terms of the information, we're continuing to gather information as we get it".

The Bennett Brothers attended Alief Taylor High School in Houston and both were star football players at Texas A&M.

Hardin added: "I can tell you that Michael had nothing to do with anything that happened with this lady they're alleging".

"It is very important I say this", Smith said on ESPN's "First Take".

Roseman said the Eagles spoke to some current members of the team before making the trade to acquire Bennett from Seattle and the word from players who played with Bennett is that Bennett "is a good teammate".
