Google News Initiative kicks off with Subscribe With Google, other efforts

In addition to this, the company has also announced Subscribe with Google, that makes it easier for you to subscribe to your favourite news publications and access them anywhere.

Google is now letting retailers list their products on Google Search in exchange for a cut of transaction revenue, according to a blog post by the company.

Google has been selling search ads to retailers for a long time, and more recently has been forging deeper partnerships as it tries to fulfill its own shopping ambitions.

The VP of news products at Google, Richard Gringas, stated, "While we take great care to present the most authoritative information, there are many cases where users can and will find information that's not authoritative".

The lab's launch emerges as the fight against fake news reaches boiling point following allegations that millions of Facebook users had their data harvested to influence the U.S. presidential election. Google says it's hoping to make this signal available to more news organizations this year.

Japanese newspaper house The Mainichi has been named as the only Asian launch partner in Subscribe with Google, one of the key plans in the Google News Initiative launched overnight.

Among these is the "Subscribe with Google" feature, where users will be able to subscribe to a number of news publications, and pay for access to their content, through Google accounts.

Google's ongoing bids to stifle fake news, which have also included demoting unverified sources in its "Top News" section, follow on from findings in the 2018 Edelman Trust Barometer. Google is also expected to spend $300 million over the next 3 years to help them reach their goals. The product, training and research offered as part of the Digital News Initiative will move under the GNI umbrella and the DNI Fund will continue to support innovative projects from European news organisations. They will not affect Google's regular search results.

We're grateful for the insights and for the adventurous spirit of these early partners, who have helped us start to address what Jon Slade, Chief Commercial Officer of the Financial Times, called the "core issues that are essential to a successful subscription business: easy sign-up, frictionless payment, and improved discovery for subscribers".

We work with news organizations around the world to develop and deploy technology that improves newsroom efficiency, creates enriching storytelling experiences, and protects journalists from cyber attacks around the world.

Google also announced Outline, an open-source tool which allows news organizations to set a up a corporate virtual private network (VPN) on their own server to safely connect to the internet and keep their communication private.

"We know that success can be achieved only by working together, and we look forward to collaborating with the news industry to build a stronger future for journalism".
