Miley Cyrus Sued by Jamaican Artist for Allegedly Stealing 'We Can't Stop'

May, whose stage name is Flourgon, said his song has been "a favorite for lovers of reggae music worldwide" since it topped the charts in Jamaica. Things no run we", which she sings as "We run things.

According to legal documents first obtained by The Blast, Caribbean songwriter Michael May, who performs under the name Flourgon, has sued the singer in NY federal court.

Jamaican songwriter Michael May (who goes by the stage name Flourgon) filed the $300 million United States dollars suit yesterday (March 13) in Manhattan, claiming that Cyrus's hit ripped off his 1988 song "We Run Things".

Now: "We Run Things", which is a great song, sounds absolutely nothing like "We Can't Stop", which is not.

Miley Cyrus has been accused of stealing the lyrics to her 2013 hit "We Can't Stop".

Cyrus "dramatically changed her style of dress and personal vocalizations to reflect the grittiness, aggression and sultriness associated with US-based hip-hop, R&B, urban and Caribbean music", the lawsuit said.

Flourgon's track never charted in the U.S., and was released four years before Miley was born. The lawsuit carries hefty demands, with an injunction to halt sales and further performances of the song, a full-fledged trial by jury, along with damages and attorney's fees.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in New York City, claims Cyrus' megahit borrows from Flourgon's 1988 song, "We Run Things".

We Can't Stop, from Cyrus' album Bangerz, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013, with the single Wrecking Ball a major smash too.
