KP chides Rabada's two-Test suspension

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected Rabada's claim the contact with Smith was accidental.

The visitors lost Mitchell Marsh (45) in the first over as Rabada uprooted his middle stump, before Pat Cummins (five) was well caught in the gully by De Bruyn.

Tim Paine was left unbeaten on 28.

Rabada had a further disciplinary charge hanging over his head on Monday, with another demerit point issued to him for his celebration upon dismissing David Warner on Sunday.

"I found that there was contact between Rabada and Smith‚ and in my judgement the contact by Rabada was inappropriate and deliberate‚" the release quoted match referee Jeff Crowe as saying.

Both players were given one demerit point, with Marsh fined 20 per cent of his match fee and Rabada 15.

Speaking before Steyn's status had been revealed, South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said that he hoped to have the paceman back in time for the fourth Test at the Wanderers.

He had not scored a ton in his last 13 Tests but featured in an 84-run partnership with Vernon Philander (36) for the eighth wicket and a further 58 with Keshav Maharaj, who swatted at the Australian bowling to score 30 off 24 balls.

South Africa are assured of the second prize of five lakh dollars.

"I think it's up to some of our senior guys to just help him", de Villiers said. It wasn't straightforward, with Australia removing Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers in quick succession to have the South Africans 81-4. "I'm letting the team as well as myself down".

For his part, Rabada said he would need to avoid getting into close proximity with opponents.

Rabada was handed a two-Test suspension after being found guilty of a level two charge of "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact" with with Steve Smith on Day 1 of their second Test in Port Elizebeth whilst giving the Australian cricket team skipper a send-off. That took his total of points after three previous offences to eight and triggered an automatic two-Test ban.

In a major blow to South Africa, fast bowler Dale Steyn's much-sought return is delayed once again as he has been ruled out of the third Test of the four-match series against Australia after failing to recover fully from a heel injury.

De Villiers scored an unbeaten 126 in South Africa's first innings, turning the match in the space of 146 balls.

Fresh off his incredible man of the match performance in Port Elizabeth, Kagiso Rabada has reclaimed top spot among bowlers in the latest ICC Test rankings. South Africa, extraordinarily, haven't yet won a home Test series against Australia since readmission, and 2/1 says that they aren't about to do so this time around.

With the series now level at 1-1, the Cape Town Test - beginning Thursday March 22 - looms as a pivotal match in the series.
