The majority of civilian casualties - 65 percent - were from anti-government groups, with 42 percent attributed to the Taliban. It may be mentioned that United Nations started documenting the casualties in Afghanistan in 2009 and it had no data of human causalities from 2001 to 2009.
"The chilling statistics in this report provide credible data about the war's impact, but the figures alone can not capture the appalling human suffering inflicted on ordinary people, especially women and children", said Tadamichi Yamamoto, United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Kabul, said in a statement.
Yamamoto, who also heads UNAMA, expressed deep concern at the increased harm to civilians caused by suicide attacks.
The UN also points out that airstrikes by global and Afghan forces caused more casualties than the previous year.
UN's latest report indicates the death toll for Afghan civilians amid air attacks to be mounting, while the number of deaths and injuries in Afghanistan's battle to have decreased past year.
Airstrikes - which are carried out only by the United States-led global forces, in an operation now called Resolute Support, and the Afghan Air Force, not by the Taliban and their allies - killed 295 civilian bystanders and wounded 336 more, the report said.
Reckless actions by worldwide troops had increased collateral damages and registered 20 percent of the civilian casualties - a seven percent increase from 2016.
He added due to the weak leadership last month many security forces had been killed and injured.
"I am particularly appalled by the continued indiscriminate and unlawful use of IEDs such as suicide bombs and pressure-plate devices in civilian populated areas", Yamamoto said.
The Taliban wrote on Wednesday, to the American people that they wanted to end Afghanistan's 17-year battle, however, stated that the message should not be seen as a sign of weakness and fight against U.S. forces would go on.
As compared to 2016, the number of deaths fell by two per cent and that of the wounded fell by 11 per cent. Contrary to the overall decrease in civilian casualties, women casualties increased by less than one percent, and women deaths increased by 5 percent.
Report states that over 28,000 civilians have been killed and over 52,000 wounded in Afghanistan since 2009.
But the total number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan last year decreased by nearly a tenth, or nine percent, compared to the year before.
UNAMA Report 2017 gives us a competitive study of last eight years-from 2009-to 2017. What was new about it was the use of published statistics and logical arguments - not just ideological harangues - to persuade the American citizenry that its government's lengthy investment in the war has been a dire mistake.
