United Kingdom foreign minister set to visit Rohingya refugee camp

The meeting followed Johnson's visit to a refugee camp in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar district, where almost 700,000 Rohingya have sought sanctuary after fleeing a Myanmar army crackdown launched in northern Rakhine last August.

Boris Johnson confronted Aung San Suu Kyi over the plight of Rohingya muslim refugees today as they held talks in Burma.

Visiting a border refugee camp, the Foreign Secretary said such a return would only be possible if a "political solution" could be found to remove the great danger from going back.

Mr Johnson's intervention came after he spent Saturday touring a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, on the south east coast of Bangladesh.

Hundreds of thousands of the Muslim minority have fled what the United Nations has called a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

Burma and Bangladesh have agreed a schedule for repatriating the refugees.

Myanmar must find a safe and dignified way for Rohingya Muslims to return, the United Kingdom foreign secretary has said, after meeting the government of Bangladesh.

But aid agencies have expressed fears at their safety, and at the slow progress, with only 1,500 expected to return per week.

"As with other, previous reports of mass graves, this report highlights the ongoing and urgent need for Burmese authorities to cooperate with an independent, credible investigation into allegations of atrocities in northern Rakhine", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

He said: "It is vital that the Rohingya refugees must be allowed to their homes in Rakhine voluntarily, in safety and with dignity, under worldwide oversight, and when the conditions. are right".

The foreign secretary paid tribute to the "hospitality and compassion" of the Bangladeshi government in providing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya community, but emphasised refugee rights must be respected.

Bo, who was at a Vatican conference on human trafficking, again defended Myanmar civilian leader Aung Sung Suu Kyi, saying she has no constitutional right to speak out against the military.

The foreign secretary's trip to Bangladesh is the first such official visit in a decade.

Johnson was scheduled to fly on to Bangkok later Sunday for a visit that will include meetings with junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha and the Thai chairman of an advisory board on the Rohingya crisis.
