NC travelers react to deadly Amtrak collision with freight train

The crash came just five days after an Amtrak train carrying Republican members of Congress collided with a garbage truck in western Virginia, killing one passenger and injuring several others.

People there are offering comfort and a warm place to stay for the passengers on the train, many of them coming straight from the hospital.

It appeared to McMaster that the Amtrak train was not traveling on the right track at the time of the crash.

The passenger said the feeling was very eerie and that it went completely silent before he heard the boom and then screams.

The locomotive engineer told the NTSB the train was traveling at about 80 miles per hour as it passed milepost 15.5 on the route, the NTSB said. At least two children were involved in the accident, Shelton said.

Kinney said she and her boyfriend suffered minor injuries. She was taken to the hospital for treatment, including an X-ray scan.

"The injuries range from cuts and bruises to severe broken bones".

Some passengers called their loved ones in the minutes afterward.

Karen Edwards and her 7-year-old daughter, Maddie, took doughnuts to rescue workers near the scrash site Sunday morning.

Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson said during a phone call with reporters Sunday afternoon that, "Our understanding is that the signal system was down and that we were being managed by the dispatchers and by CSX controlling the switches on this bypass".
