Main was not at Shopian firing spot: Military sources on FIR

However, on Wednesday another youth, Rayees Ahmed Ganaie of Narpora Shopian succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours today after battling for life for almost five days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of SKIMS Soura. A Major, who led the Army personnel at the time of the incident, was also named in the FIR.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army claimed that the troops opened fire in self-defense after their convoy came under heavy stone pelting.

Earlier PDP's alliance partner BJP's R S Pathani had said that the FIR should be withdrawn and a fresh one be lodged without naming anyone.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had announced that the police would register a case against the army men involved in killing the youth.

The J&K police has registered an FIR No 26/2018 PRC under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 336 (endangering life) against Army's 10 Garhwal Regiment for killing the two youth.

Terming the incident a "setback" to the political process, Mufti said she had spoken about it to Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman who asked her to take the required action in case there was "carelessness".

The Army said its personnel had fired in self-defence after a junior level officer fell unconscious following the attack. The counter-FIR was filed against unknown persons, they said. She told the house, "The Army would not be demoralised by an FIR".

Two students were killed on the spot on January 27 and another died Wednesday morning at a Srinagar hospital from bullet injuries sustained when army soldiers opened fire on people in Ganowpora village of Shopian. The FIR has been lodged at the Shopian police station.
