FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe to Step Down

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stepped down Monday, ahead of his planned retirement in March, according to multiple reports.

McCabe, who assumed his position as deputy director in 2016 and had planned to retire this spring, has come under fire from the United States president in recent weeks.

McCabe exited the FBI building around noon on Monday after more than 20 years with the bureau.

The money came from Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe's political action committee and the Virginia Democratic Party and was donated before McCabe was promoted to deputy director and assumed a supervisory role in the Clinton email investigation.

McCabe went on leave from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday, pending the effective date of his retirement in March, said two government officials familiar with the move. The president and some congressional Republicans accused him of bias.

Trump's dislike of McCabe dates back to October 2016, when news stories revealed McCabe's wife had run as a Democrat for the Virginia state legislature, aided with almost $500,000 in donations from the political action committee of then-Governor Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of Hillary Clinton, and that McCabe had gone on to oversee probes involving Clinton.

"The president was silent for a moment and then turned on McCabe, suggesting he ask his wife how it feels to be a loser", NBC News reports. He had served in the FBI's No. 2 role since January 2016.

Trump tweeted in December: "How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin' James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife's campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?" The Wall Street Journal reported in October 2016 that McAuliffe's political organization gave almost $500,000 to Jill McCabe's campaign for state Senate.

In December, Trump tweeted "FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits".

McCabe replied: "OK, sir".

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pushed back against suggestions that President Trump had anything to do with McCabe's ouster.

"The only thing the President applied pressure to is to get it resolved so you guys and everyone else can focus on the things Americans actually care about: making sure everybody gets the Russian Federation fever out of their system once and for all", she said.
