Zainab's murderer caught: CM Punjab vouches for public hanging

The breakthrough came in what officials are calling a serial murder case and which has stirred outrage across the country.

Zainab's father also addressed the media yesterday, saying he was satisfied that the authorities had finally arrested his daughter's murderer.

Speaking at a news conference in Lahore, Shahbaz Sharif said the suspect had confessed and his DNA matched samples from the crime scene in Kasur.

Punjab government spokesman Malik Ahmad told PTI that the suspect had confessed to his crime.

According to his confession, Imran kidnapped Zainab at 6:45 pm. and when he couldn't find an appropriate hiding place, he roamed around with her for over 1.5 kilometres and finally took her to a pile of garbage. "Whenever I look at her, I just feel sick with worry", Elahi said. Her body was found from a heap trash on January 9 in Kasur when her parents were in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah. An autopsy confirmed that she was strangled to death.

Television stations have repeatedly broadcast chilling CCTV footage purportedly showing the young girl walking hand-in-hand with an unidentified male in what may have been her last moments.

The rapist and serial killer from Kasur who used to rape and kill minor girls has been caught by the police just a day before the expiry of the Supreme Court's three-day deadline.

The confessional video of the accused in the rape and murder of seven-year-old Zainab, surfaced later on Wednesday.

He had fled to Pakpattan after Zainab's murder case was reported nationally and to Arifwala from there before returning to hometown days later.
