Spanish court rejects issuing European Union arrest warrant for Puigdemont

Spain's Supreme Court on Monday said it will not reactivate an global warrant to arrest deposed Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, after he flew to Denmark from Belgium, The Guardian reported.

The supreme court had previously issued a European arrest warrant when he originally travelled to Belgium only to withdraw it because Belgium does not have a crime which is the exact equivalent of rebellion.

It came nearly three months after he was removed from office and fled to Belgium following Catalonia's declaration of independence.

Spain rescinded its European arrest warrant against him in December, when it became clear Belgian authorities would not cooperate. It is title of colloquium, organized by Department of Political Sciences of this university, which presents in its call to Puigdemont, which since end of October takes refuge in Brussels, like "130 president of Government of Catalonia".

The visit to Denmark is a huge gamble by Mr Puigdemont.

"If Catalans can't change their laws and leaders, that means there is no democracy in Catalonia", he said, adding that Catalans "will not surrender to authoritarianism".

The Faeroes and Greenland have long sought more autonomy while allowing Denmark to handle their foreign affairs and defense.

He said it was important to wait until "constitutional order" had returned to the region.

A judge claims Mr Puigdemont wants to "provoke arrest abroad" so he can blame Spain for missing his election as regional leader.

Although the ex-president is hoping to be sworn into his position via videolink, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says Puigdemont must attend any debates in person. Whether or not Puigdemont can lead Catalonia in absentia has been debated hotly.

But, reports are that newly installed speaker of the Catalan parliament, Roger Torrent, is expected to announce Puigdemont as the sole nominee for the region's presidency.

The Spanish government has threatened to arrest him the moment he sets foot back in Spain. Leading members of the government and opposition have declined to meet with him.
