US Senate to Vote on Stopgap Spending Bill on Monday

As FiveThirtyEight's Harry Enten recently pointed out, Republicans pushed the most recent government shutdowns in the mid-1990s and in 2013, and while during both episodes Americans said that Republicans were more to blame than Democrats, electorally, it didn't ultimately mean much.

United States senate's Republican leadership will vote in noon to end the shutdown with a proposal to fund the federal government till February 8, as demanded by Democrats, and take up fate of undocumented immigrant brought as children later if not resolved by then.

"We have yet to reach an agreement on a path forward", Schumer said, adding that talks would continue. The Senate adjourned without voting today, guaranteeing the shutdown would continue into a third day.

But Short didn't stop short of criticizing Democrats over the "manufactured shutdown".

Both parties blamed each other throughout the weekend for the impasse.

Social Security and most other safety-net programs were unaffected by the lapse in federal spending authority.

Uniformed service members and law enforcement officers are among the essential government employees who will be working without pay until the federal government reopens.

Lawmakers were mindful that the political stakes would soar Monday morning, when thousands of federal workers would be told to stay home or, in many cases, work without pay. The contours of that proposal were still taking shape tonight.

The bill needed 60 votes to pass a procedural hurdle in the 100-member Senate, meaning Republicans - who have a one-seat majority - could not maneuver on their own.

Still, Speaker Paul Ryan has promised House Republicans that they will not be bound by any arrangement reached in the Senate on immigration to reopen the government, House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows and Representative Doug Collins of Georgia said on Sunday.

The emerging approach found advocates in South Carolina Sen.

Graham said Miller is out of the "mainstream" with his immigration views. All those proposals were shot down by the Republicans.

However, the vote fell short in the Senate, where Republicans have a narrow 51-49 majority and passing most legislation requires bipartisan support. "To my Democratic friends, don't overplay your hand", he told reporters.

"We now enter day two of the first real government shutdown ever to take place when one party controlled the presidency, the House and the Senate".

Luna told WFAA that he is keeping close watch on the government shutdown that started over the weekend after Senate Democrats gathered enough votes to block the approving of a spending bill to keep the government funded. The President did speak with Republican leaders over the phone to strategize, the New York Times reported, but he mostly refrained from weighing in on the negotiations publicly, save for a few tweets blaming Democrats for the shutdown.

"I think they miscalculated on the shutdown", Cornyn said. "It's very unpopular and they're trying to find a way out of it".

This craziness is exactly why people voted for Trump last November.

Senate Republicans and Democrats are believed to have drawn out measures each party agrees on.

This morning on Twitter, he called on the GOP-controlled Senate to consider deploying the "nuclear option" - changing Senate rules to end the filibuster - and reopen the government with a simple majority.

On Sunday night, Democrats appeared to be holding out for a firmer commitment from McConnell.

Democrats are facing intense pressure from their base to solve the issue over the young immigrants and are skeptical of Republicans' credibility when offering to take up the issue.

During the Friday meeting with Trump, Schumer reportedly agreed to only one-year appropriation for the border wall. The Democrat says Trump expressed support for a fix for the young immigrants in return for financing for Trump's wall along the U.S. -Mexico border - only to back off hours later. Two days later, Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on ABC's "This Week" today.
