Black Widow solo movie gets writer

Black Widow-who debuted in 2010's Iron Man 2 and is played by Scarlett Johansson, one of the most bankable actresses in the world-always seemed like an obvious choice for a standalone spinoff movie.

While Marvel has not officially announced or confirmed the news, sources say the film is in "very early development".

Schaeffer is an up and coming screenwriter whose script The Shower - a comedy about an alien invasion during a baby shower - caught the attention of Anne Hathaway on the Black List, attaching herself to the pic. She wrote and directed 2009's TiMER and also penned the screenplay for the forthcoming Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake, Nasty Women.

Although Johansson has reprised the Black Widow role six times already - including in the Avengers movies, and most recently in 2016's Captain America: Civil War - this marks the character's first solo film.

Marvel Studios is reportedly moving forward with a standalone Black Widow movie, with Jac Schaeffer on board to write the script. We think Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of her is fantastic. There are two heroes in the Avengers who haven't headlined their own films yet though: Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye.

However, I think the underlying sexism of Marvel, or rather the presumption of sexism Marvel have on their audience, is only part of the story. All the while, fans waited and wondered when Natasha Romanoff would get her own stand-alone film. If this comes to fruition, Widow's movie would take place in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is basically a huge question mark at this point. The character is set to return in Avengers: Infinity War. Sadly though, the character was never the main lead previously as she only served in ensemble casts. Even though we do not know details on the studio's plan of action for the film, this is probably the best news that can come for all Black Widow fans as of now. The Black Widow project, however, has still not received the green light, according to Variety.
