Official inquiry launched into handling of Cam Newton's concussion test; penalties possible

Backup quarterback Derek Anderson took over under center while Newton was examined in the medical tent on the Panthers' sideline. "I appreciate him. So I'm gonna send him some sauce", Jordan said after the game, via ESPN.

Jordan got the last word by making the game-saving play in Sunday's 31-26 victory over the Panthers in their wild-card playoff game - plowing through two blockers to force an intentional grounding penalty (although Carolina coach Ron Rivera disagreed with the grounding call).

The organisation stipulates that any player suspected of having concussion must be evaluated in the dressing room. He was then taken into the medical tent but quickly came back onto the field, without having gone into the locker room, which is required after the National Football League updated the concussion protocol guidelines on December 29.

However, the question could become whether or not Newton should have been taken to the locker room for evaluations.

The changes came in conjunction with a decision not to punish the Houston Texans for their handling of a concussion suffered by quarterback Tom Savage.

'NFL concussion protocol should have dictated taking out Cam Newton and examining him immediately after direct hit to his head, ' Pat Leonard wrote.

"Based on what the young man (Newton) said to me, that is what I believe happened", Rivera said. Hurney said, "We did everything right", when asked about Newton's treatment. He said after the game the issue was with his eye, not his head.

This isn't the first time the Panthers have been investigated for how it has handled the protocol.

"Did you see the hit?"

"Yeah, you know, Carolina picked him up so the brothers could reunite", Jordan said.

In a subsequent tweet, the team added: "Cam Newton is back in at quarterback". And I think David Onyemata shut that door for him. "We're going to send him a nice little bottle of Jordan wine. And then of course he tried to like. muster himself up to get off to the sideline and broke down there".
