Klopp says Liverpool couldn't do any more to keep Coutinho

Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez has reportedly been shortlisted as a replacement for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho amid the Brazilian's possible transfer to Barcelona.

It's understood the fee consists of an initial 120 million euros, with a further 40 million euros hinging on add-ons involved in the signing.

The final deal will be eclipsed only by the £200m Paris St-Germain paid Barcelona for Neymar last summer, and the £165.7m Kylian Mbappe will cost PSG at the end of his initial loan spell from Monaco.

"Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his team-mates this was a move he was desperate to make happen".

Liverpool rejected three offers from Barca for Coutinho in the previous transfer window - the last for £118m - and denied a transfer request from the player himself.

A statement on Liverpool's official website reads: "Liverpool FC can confirm Philippe Coutinho will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona, subject to medical and agreement of personal terms".

On announcing Couninho's signing, Barcelona hailed Coutinho as "a young player with potential still to be tapped".

Coutinho will not be able to play for Barcelona in the Champions League since he has already featured in the competition with Liverpool in the group stage.

WHEN Barcelona or Real Madrid come calling, top players rarely refuse the call.

Coutinho spent five years at Anfield, having joined the club from Inter Milan in 2013.

"We all wish him the best, he's done marvellous service for Liverpool, he's had a really good six months".
