Health services hit as doctors protest against NMC Bill

However, operation theatres, casualty and other emergency services will continue.

IMA Hubballi unit president Dr G B Sathoora said outpatient departments will remain closed on Tuesday.

The Bill that seeks to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a new regulatory body has rattled the country's medical fraternity. Doctors protested in parts of Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, as well.

Medical practitioners from the city are geared up for another protest to show solidarity with the nationwide bandh called by the Indian Medical Association to protest against the National Medical Council Amendment Act.

It has also proposed that specific educational modules or programmes for developing bridges across the various systems of medicine and promotion of medical pluralism, can be done with the approval of all the members present in the joint sitting.

"It removes all the regulations before starting a medical college".

The National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill was tabled in Parliament on Friday that will replace the Medical Council of India besides allowing practitioners of alternative medicines, such as homoeopathy and ayurveda to practice allopathy after completing a bridge course. The doctors are opposing this new NMC bill, said that the passing of this bill will be the black day in the medical history.

The bill is likely to come up for discussion in parliament today.

The Bill also proposes a common entrance exam and licentiate (exit) exam which all medical graduates will have to clear to get practising licences. Senior doctors from IMA are protesting another proposal of NMC which allows unrestricted fee in 60 per cent of medical seats in private medical colleges.

IMA President expressed his apprehension that the bill will increase corruption in medical education and will push up cost of medical education very high while standard of medical education will fall definitely.

He said the IMA has made a decision to submit a memorandum against the bill to elected representatives including Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar tomorrow. "No one needs any permission", Dr Pednekar said.
