CHP officer killed when SUV hit by possible drunk driver

A California Highway Patrol officer died after a suspected impaired driver crashed into his cruiser in Hayward Sunday night, authorities say. He is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and marijuana and is in serious condition at a hospital.

A second officer who was in the vehicle was treated at the hospital and released.

The CHP said the crash took place around 11:32 p.m. and forced the closure of all lanes on southbound Interstate Highway 880 just north of state Highway 92 in Hayward.

A California Highway Patrol officer died in a serious auto crash on Highway 880 near Hayward, according to reports. The driver's name has not been released.

"The impact was so severe that it turned a utility vehicle into a compact vehicle", a CHP official said at a Christmas morning news conference.

"This is not the way we wanted to celebrate Christmas Day", Sanchez said.

Andrew Camilleri, 33, was married and had three children who expected their father to come home and help them open Christmas presents, said Asst. Camilleri is survived by his wife, Rosanna; a daughter and two sons.

California Gov. Jerry Brown issued a statement about the crash.

In honor of Camilleri, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff. "Anne and I are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of Officer Camilleri, who died yesterday while working to keep our communities safe".
