Pence delays Mideast visit amid anger over Jerusalem shift

Pence originally planned to also pay a visit to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, but the latter has since announced Pence was not welcome, because of President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The trip to Egypt and Israel, due to begin Tuesday, has been pushed back to mid-January, allowing Pence to remain in Washington in case he needs to cast the deciding vote in the Senate over President Donald Trump's tax reforms.

"The tax vote is still in very good shape, but we don't want to take any chances whatsoever", the official said.

Trump's decision countered an worldwide consensus that Jerusalem's status should be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, who claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. On Monday, the United States, using its veto power as a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, blocked a council resolution demanding that the Trump administration rescind its decision.

Then Trump announced on December 6 that his administration had chose to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, breaking with decades of US policy and drawing sharp criticism from allies and adversaries.

The House is set to vote on the bill Tuesday and the Senate will likely follow suit on Wednesday.

The White House warned that cancelling the meeting in the West Bank would be "counterproductive", but Abbas has been under heavy domestic pressure to shun Pence following Trump's announcement.

Senator John McCain's return home to Arizona to fight cancer has left Republicans with a razor-thin margin to push the legislation over the finishing line.

Abbas' diplomatic adviser, Majdi Khaldi, said Abbas would not meet with Pence "because the USA has crossed red lines" with its decision on Jerusalem.

Following the cancellation of the visit to the center of Egypt's Christian faith, the vice president's press secretary, Alyssa Farah, has dropped any mention of faith outreach, referring only to meetings with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

The new date for the trip is January 14th, according to CNN. "We'll obviously still go to Egypt and Israel, but we may add additional countries", the official said.
