US Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution Voiding Trump's Jerusalem Move

The US stood isolated at the UN Security Council on Monday, 18 December, after all the members except Washington voted in favour of an Egypt-drafted resolution, which would have required President Donald Trump to withdraw his declaration of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. The resolution declared that any decisions, measures or action that might change Jerusalem's status are legally void and must be annulled.

With all the other 14 members of the Council, including its allies Britain and France, uniting against the US, Permanent Representative Nikki Haley cast the veto-powered negative vote killing the resolution on Monday.

Al Jazeera reports that the draft "did not mention the U.S. by name", in an apparent effort to keep Washington from using its power of veto.

"The fact that this veto is being done in defence of American sovereignty and in defence of America's role in the Middle East peace process is not a source of embarrassment for us; it should be an embarrassment to the remainder of the Security Council", Haley said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu immediately thanked Haley for her stance.

Presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeina denounced the U.S. veto, calling it a mockery of the global community and a concession to Israeli occupation and aggression.

This was the first time the U.S. exercised its veto since Trump became President.

In his rant in last week's letters section against President Trump's bold decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel, Jon E. Weinstein first disclaims how noble he and "both major parties" were in the 1980s in supporting this very move.

The Palestinians slammed the veto as "unacceptable" and vowed to turn to the UN General Assembly to win adoption for the resolution that was blocked at the council.

USA wields its United Nations veto over status of Jerusalem Israel considers Jerusalem its eternal and indivisible capital and wants all embassies based there Resolution expressed "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem".

In the fairy tale, can't-we-all-get-along world Mr. Weinstein inhabits, supporting or voting on fancy-sounding proposals is all it takes to make himself feel like a good guy and to fool other people into believing that he is "doing something" when he's not.

Following the USA block on the U.N. resolution, a spokesman for Erdogan said that the annulment of Trump's decision would be sought in the U.N. General Assembly.

This has infuriated the Palestinians and Arab countries, which have strongly protested against the USA move. But the Palestinians insist that East Jerusalem should be the capital of their future independent state.

And it would have called for intensified and accelerated worldwide and regional efforts to achieve Middle East peace. The United States is a genuine partner.in the Balfour Declaration...

He said Haley "lit a candle of truth" and dispelled "lies".
