Autopsies underway for pharmaceutical billionaires found dead in their home

Autopsies are being performed on Saturday on two bodies found dead in a North York home that belonged to billionaire Barry Sherman and his wife Honey, police say.

The police had been called to the property just before noon, apparently in response to a medical complaint.

Apotex, which called news of the Shermans' deaths "tragic", was recently implicated in a price-fixing scheme with 17 other drug companies and their subsidiaries. He was ranked recently by Forbes as Canada's 12th-richest person with a net worth of about $3 billion. He stepped down as chief executive in 2012 but remained as executive chairman. Investigators are working on the theory that Mr. Sherman killed his wife, hung her body and then hanged himself at the pool's edge, the source said.

Mr. Sherman, 75, founded the privately held Apotex in 1974, growing it by introducing large numbers of low-priced generic drugs that took market share from brand pharmaceuticals.

In a statement, Mayor Tory said he was "shocked and heartbroken" to learn of the deaths, and noted the couple's generous contributions to the city.

The Toronto Police homicide unit is collaborating with the investigation in case it ultimately takes over, he said.

Sarah Alvi lives with her family across the road from the Sherman home and has known the couple for four years.

The deaths shocked the country, which knew the couple as ardent philanthropists who donated to universities, hospitals and charities.

Police have issued few details about the circumstances of the deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman.

"I am beyond words right now", Ontario health minister Eric Hoskins said in a tweet.

Apotex released a statement on Saturday paying tribute to its founder, praising both his philanthropic efforts and what it described as his vision for health care.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau were among those to offer a tribute to the couple through social media. "Toronto Police are investigating and I hope that investigation will be able to provide answers for all of us who are mourning this tremendous loss".
