Turkish, Palestinian presidents meet ahead of Islamic summit

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Tuesday arrived in Turkey to attend the extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Al-Quds Al-Sharif (Jerusalem) on the invitation of the president of Turkey.

The summit to be held on December 13 in Istanbul will be preceded by the council of Foreign Ministers' meeting which will be attended by Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, it added.

That does not seem like a very inviting attitude to take when Turkey is having a little trouble rounding up top-shelf attendees for the summit called by Erdogan, who is now president of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The goal of the extraordinary head of states and government meeting is to coordinate a response to the recognition by U.S. President Donald Trump of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Malaysia's participation at the summit reflects the country's commitment and unwavering support for the Palestinians in their pursuit to attain their legitimate and inalienable rights for an independent State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Egypt and the United Arab Emirates will send foreign ministers, while Saudi Arabia had yet to say how it would participate. "Most OIC Member States are expected to attend", the Foreign Office said. "It seems some countries are very timid of the United States".

"We will make a call for countries that have so far not recognized Palestine to do so now", he said.

The hard-line Turkish paper Yeni Safak, known for its strong support of Erdogan and his Justice and Development (AK) Party, wrote that the conference is expected to go beyond messages of condemnation and take action to reverse the U.S. decision.

Al-Husainy made it clear that Tel Aviv and Trump must retract their decisions and the extraordinary OIC summit will not only be a beacon of hope for the Palestinians, but also to all Muslims and the world community.

Trump officially declared Quds Israel's capital, despite warnings from around the world that the measure risks triggering a fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.
