North Korea says United Nations envoy expressed willingness to ease tensions on peninsula

Chinese experts said Feltman's visit is "necessary and constructive" to ease heightening tensions on the peninsula, and it will help magnify the UN's role in resolving the peninsula's nuclear issue as an worldwide organization, reported the China Daily.

The U.N. political affairs chief received a warm welcome on Thursday as he held talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, with Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs likely high on the agenda.

The UN official was scheduled to meet other representatives of the North Korean regime to discuss matters of mutual interest and concerns.

He arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday for a stay expected to last four or five days.

Kosachev added that there is no alternative to the Russian-Chinese settlement plan for the North Korean situation.

The United States and South Korea responded with a show of force conducting their largest ever joint air exercise which was a five-day showcase of aircraft and jet fighter capabilities.

On Wednesday, he met with North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong-guk and Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang Alexander Matsegora. Feltman, who left Pyongyang earlier today, has yet to comment on his trip. Speaking to foreign correspondents at a December 7 end-of-year gathering jointly organized in Washington, D.C., by the Korea Foundation and George Washington University Institute for Korean Studies, Yun said Washington could attempt dialogue if 60 days pass without nuclear and missile provocations after a message from Pyongyang that it intends to stop.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert has said Feltman is not visiting Pyongyang on behalf of Washington.

North Korea has since labelled this an "all-out provocation" and declared that "bellicose remarks" by United States officials had made the outbreak of war an "established fact", reported The Guardian.

Feltman's visit began just a week after North Korea launched its most sophisticated intercontinental ballistic missile to date, an action that may lead to new sanctions by the Security Council.
