Storms bringing high winds, snow and ice

While the worst of the storm is hitting Scotland, strong winds and torrential rain were reported in Cumbria overnight.

The Met Office has warned of flying debris that could lead to injuries or danger to life, while damage to property is also possible.

"During Friday, increasingly frequent snow showers already affecting parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England will extend across many other northern and western parts of the United Kingdom", said the Met Office.

Forecasting snow showers in the United Kingdom can be quite challenging as conditions are often borderline between rain and snow.

Met Éireann said Thursday will be bitterly cold overall, with gusty north to northwest breezes bringing showers over parts of Ulster, Connacht and west Munster by the afternoon.

"1cm to 5cm of snow is widely expected, with up to 10cm in places".

Northern England is also expecting snow on Sunday evening.

"At the moment we have a yellow weather warning in place, but it could be upgraded to amber".

Yellow "be aware" alerts have been put on place from 8am on Thursday until 6pm on Saturday with severe weather expected to cause widespread transport disruption.

The Met Office has issued an amber "be prepared" weather warning for northern Scotland on Thursday.

Emma said: "The northern edge of that - which Carlisle and north Cumbria is in - will expect to see snow, where the cold air meets the rain".

Road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected, while a loss of power in some areas is also possible.

Snow and falling temperatures are also forecast for parts of Britain later in the week.
