Alabama slips into playoff, beating Ohio State for final spot

Ohio State and USC, both winners of their respective conferences, were not admitted into the playoff. Georgia and Oklahoma will play in the Rose Bowl in the other semifinal. The debate heading into Sunday's announcement regards whether Ohio State or Alabama should make the playoff. Wisconsin, which lost to the Buckeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday to suffer its first loss, dropped from No. 4 to No. 6.

The committee voted Clemson No. 1 followed by Oklahoma, Georgia and Alabama.

After a 38-3 blowout win over Miami, defending national champion Clemson (12-1) has now won three straight ACC titles and clinched the No. 1 spot in the playoff rankings for the second time in three years.

The Buckeyes' 55-24 loss to an unranked Iowa (7-5) on November 4 proved too much for the 13 committee members to overcome, especially in light of the fact that Alabama hasn't lost to an unranked team in the last decade and has never lost any game under Saban by more than 14 points.

The Buckeyes beat an undefeated Wisconsin team in the Big Ten Championship on Saturday. "We'll let everybody else argue about who should and shouldn't have been, but what we know right now is that we have a great ball game coming up on January 1".

In fairness, the Seminoles would've made more noise this year had their starting quarterback stayed healthy, but you can't convince me that would've happened to an Oklahoma, Clemson, or - dare I say it - an Ohio State. Teams don't play well extremely well after they play us. "I think our efforts to play more conference games, to schedule up to a reasonable degree, to reduce the number of mismatches should serve us well".
