Alfa Romeo Sauber confirms Leclerc and Ericsson

The Italian auto manufacturer is making a return to the sport after 30-years to sponsor the team.

Ferrari was known to be keen on placing both its outstanding junior drivers, Charles Leclerc and Antonio Giovinazzi, at Sauber for 2018 as part of an expanded technical partnership with the team. During the event, a previous generation F1 vehicle was unveiled featuring a red and white livery and a prominent Alfa Romeo badge (above, with Leclerc and Ericsson).

"So it's a great pleasure announcing Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericsson will be our official drivers", said Marchionne, administrator for Fiat who own Alfa Romeo and Ferrari.

The news leaves Pascal Wehrlein's hopes of securing another F1 drive with Williams, though Robert Kubica remains favourite to be Lance Stroll's teammate, which is the only remaining slot on the grid for next season. He was speaking in Milan at an event marking the launch of Sauber's new partnership with Alfa Romeo.

During a press conference held at Alfa Romeo's museum on Saturday, Leclerc and Ericsson took the wraps off the squad's proposed 2018 livery, which was presented on one of the team's showcars.

"Formula One is the natural reference point for a marque like this", he said. That was promptly followed by a deal with Ferrari for 2018.
