New 2019 BMW i8 Roadster and Coupe Revealed

The new BMW i8 Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Also included is new technology such as BMW's controversial "display key" as well as the latest iDrive infotainment system.

The addition of the soft-top roof has resulted in a weight increase of 60 kilos over the coupe.

The i8 Roadster becomes the third member of BMW's futuristic i family.

The Roadster's soft-top is all-electric and opens in 15 seconds at a button's push while traveling up to 31 miles per hour.

The long talked about roadster features an electric folding soft-top that's stored in a space-saving vertical position.

Getting back to the main attraction here, the i8 two-seat Roadster has an electrically-operated targa-style fabric top that can perform the open or close trick in under 16 seconds, at speeds of up to 50km/h.

The new i8 features an aluminium body supporting a carbon fibre reinforced passenger cell and under the skin the i8's electronics have been given a boost with battery capacity increased by 14Ah to 34Ah.

BMW has also had a fiddle with the glasshouse, beefing up the windscreen and quarter window and turning the rear window in to a deflector which can be raised or lowered wherever you have the roof. Revisions to the three-cylinder turbo petrol engine powering the rears take power to 227bhp and torque to 236lb ft, and total system output is up by 15bhp at 369bhp.

BMW says even the 1.5-liter turbo engine's sound has been improved, while both the Coupe and the Roadster are capable of reaching speeds of up to 65 miles per hour purely on electric power. The automaker claims the number of driving situations where the electric motor is exclusively responsible for powering the auto has been significantly increased, with the combustion engine only being brought into play when accelerating hard.

Now that formula has been enhanced with a refurbished design, some battery and motor tweaks, and the introduction of a two-seat topless i8 Roadster.

For those not up-to-date with BMWs nomenclature and model lineup, we are talking about the i8 facelift, which is also getting a much-awaited Roadster version. When we say this beast is packing a 1.5-litre engine it might not sound impressive but bare with us.

Pricing has not been announced, but a BMW representative told us the i8 Roadster will start "north of $150,000".

What the i8 Roadster does offer over the coupe in performance is range.

It sure looks tempting in this new hue, called E-Copper.
