Georgia vows punishment after hotel blaze kills 11

Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia told journalists it was found out there were some violations of fire safety standards at the hotel; in particular, the hotel lacked a fire escape.

A fire at a luxury hotel in the Georgian Black Sea resort city of Batumi left 11 people dead and 21 others hurt, officials said Saturday, ABC News reports.

More than a hundred firefighters and other personnel scrambled to the Leogrand Hotel & Casino in the center of Batumi after fire broke out at around 8pm, local time. According to officials, no participants of the contest, who were staying at the hotel, were injured in the blaze.

The interior ministry earlier said 12 had died, but later adjusted the figure to 11.

Twenty one people were hospitalised, mostly with carbon monoxide poisoning, and were in a stable condition, it added.

All those who perished had died after inhaling fumes, the regional health minister, Zaal Mikeladze, said. Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili offered his condolences to the victims' families.

The fire started late on Friday on one floor of the Leogrand hotel and spread quickly.
