Chip Kelly reached agreement with Florida, has window to back out

The competition for Chip Kelly is down to two candidates as UCLA representatives met with Kelly on Tuesday, according to media reports, and the former OR head coach is now expected to decide between the Bruins and Florida this week, ESPN reported.

At least Florida, Tennessee and UCLA have made overtures or offers to Kelly, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA Today Sports. He has reportedly turned down overtures from Tennessee and Nebraska.

Kelly has been out of coaching since 2016 after two National Football League stops with the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers were less than successful as he finished 28-35 in the pros. He spent three years with the Philadelphia Eagles and one with the San Francisco 49ers, getting fired from both jobs.

The Gators have been conducting a head coaching search since firing Jim McElwain earlier this season. Six members of the school's athletic foundation visited him at his New Hampshire home last week, according to multiple reports. UCLA's job came open on Sunday, when they fired Jim Mora. The Bruins are believed to be attractive to Kelly given his West Coast ties, but have the drawback of being an Under Armour school (Kelly has a long-standing relationship with Nike founder Phil Knight dating back to his OR days). Nebraska coach Mike Riley's time in Lincoln seems to be coming to an end relatively soon, as does Bret Bielema's at Arkansas.

In 2013, after he had joined the Eagles, the NCAA gave Kelly an 18-month show-cause penalty for "failure to monitor" in the Will Lyles case in which OR paid the 7-on-7 coach $25,000 to steer recruits to Oregon.
