3 killed in shooting that ends at California elementary school, official says

California Gov. Jerry Brown has also released a statement on the shooting, saying that he and his wife are "saddened to hear about today's violence in Tehama County, which shockingly involved schoolchildren".

Sheriff Johnston said that a number of students have been airlifted out and that the uninjured students are now safe.

Two hospitals said they were treating a total of seven gunshot victims, including at least three children.

More than 100 law enforcement officers were on scene.

NPR's Nate Rott spoke to resident Tiffany Rodgers, who knows nearly every student at the elementary school and heard the shooting from a nearby cafe. The first calls described a shooting on Bobcat Lane; calls from multiple other sites soon came in, including the elementary school.

It was "very clear" early on that "we had a subject that was randomly picking targets", he said.

Tiffany's husband, Brian Rodgers, said another witness reported seeing a white pickup drive through the school gate and start shooting.

An official at the Corning Elementary School District confirmed the elementary school in Rancho Tehama is on lockdown.

According to the CBS affiliate KHSL-TV, the shooting took place in the community of Rancho Tehama, about 15 miles southwest of Red Bluff, around 8:00 a.m.

Posts on social media showed Rancho Tehama Road being closed off with yellow crime tape, and students' parents stuck behind the road block.

No one answered the phone at the elementary school, and an official speaking for Rich DuVarney, Tehama County superintendent of schools, said he was trying to find out what was happening.

"Our doors are locked", she said. A man in the area said his roommate was among the victims in Northern California and that his neighbor was the gunman.
