Trump trades grade school insults with Kim Jong

"Together we have in our power to finally liberate this region and the world from this very serious nuclear menace, but it will require collective action, collective strength and collective devotion to winning the peace", Trump said.

"Might be a unusual thing to happen but it's certainly a possibility", Trump said during a press conference with Vietnam's president, adding that it would be "very, every nice if it did".

The comments are likely to go down extremely badly in Pyongyang, with North Korea extremely sensitive to any remarks - even if not meant to be taken seriously - that it sees as disrespectful to its rulers. "But it is certainly a possibility", Trump said.

The North Korean foreign ministry reportedly called Trump's Asia trip a "a warmonger's trip for confrontation with our country".

"Strange things happen in life".

But in its retort yesterday, North Korea said Mr Trump's warnings "can never frighten us or put a stop to our advance", but rather "pushes us to speed up the efforts to accomplish the great cause of completing the state nuclear force".

US President Donald Trump talks to the media before he and first lady Melania Trump depart on Marine One on November 3, 2017 in Washington, DC.

Shortly after that speech, North Korean officials told CNN, "We don't care about what that mad dog may utter", referring to Trump.

Aggressive rhetoric from North Korea is nothing new, and on Saturday the secretive nation described Trump as a "destroyer" who "begged for nuclear war" as the President continued his tour of Asia.

For the last months, the two leaders have been on two ends of a bitter war of words prompted in part by Pyongyang refusal to cease ballistic missile tests and the development of nuclear capabilities.

In the first of three successive tweets Sunday morning, Trump hit back at his critics.

Kim responded to those jabs with an insult of his own, saying in a statement aimed at Trump that "I will surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire".

The secretive kingdom's state-controlled media service told the North Korean people today how their former countrymen south of the Demilitarised Zone are suffering "untold pains under the USA occupation and domination".
