This Woman Just Became The First Trans State Legislator In Virginia

Virginia Democrat Danica Roem made history on November 7, 2017 by winning a seat in the House of Delegates, the first time in the United States that an openly transgender candidate won a state legislative election.

"It's historic. ... It sends a message to politicians everywhere that the politics of bigotry is over", Democratic House Caucus Chair Charniele Herring said.

Roem discussed her gender identity when asked throughout the campaign and responded to flyers released by Marshall's campaign that referred to her using male pronouns. Bob Marshall, a 13-term incumbent and socially conservative lawmaker who proudly called himself Virginia's 'chief homophobe'.

She stressed creating jobs, improving schools and addressing traffic congestion, according to ABC News. During her acceptance speech, she thanked her supporters and the trans community, saying: "To every person who has ever been singled out, who has ever been stigmatized, who has ever been the misfit, who's ever been the kid in the corner, who's ever needed someone to stand up for them when they didn't have a voice of their own because there is no one else with them, this one is for you". He held that position for the past 25 years.

Marshall had been at odds with LGBT issues and had proposed a state bill in 2015 that would allow anyone who has a license with the state to refuse services to gay people and earlier this year introduced a bill to restrict transgender people's access to public restrooms, CNN local affiliates reported.

"I don't attack my constituents".

On the campaign trail, Marshall and other Republicans repeatedly misidentified Roem's gender.

Roem is a journalist who worked for nine years reporting for the Gainesville Times and Price William Times.

Marshall conceded to Roem in a post on his Facebook page.

There were plenty of reasons progressives were so overjoyed by the results in Tuesday night's elections. "Though we all wish tonight would have turned out differently, I am deeply grateful for your support and effort over the years". Victory Fund, a group that advocates for LGBTQ candidates, said Jenkins is the first openly transgender woman elected to the city council of a major US city. Tyler Titus, who is openly transgender, won a seat on a western Pennsylvania school board.
