Blizzard is making a 'StarCraft II' campaign free to play

Blizzard has announced during its BlizzCon conference that StarCraft 2 is going free-to-play starting November 14th. Also, for a limited time if you own Wings of Liberty but none of the other campaigns you can get Heart of the Swarm as a gift by simply logging into the Blizzard desktop app.

It's a smart move by Blizzard - few people are buying full copies of StarCraft 2 and its expansions these days, and this is a good way to onboard new players who just never wanted to pay full price to find out if they liked it. Purchase required to advance a Co-op Commander beyond level five-with the exception of Raynor, Kerrigan, and Artanis, which are free to play up to and beyond level five.

Players who already owned any version of StarCraft II prior to October 31 will receive a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating their founder's status in the game when StarCraft II goes free-to-play. This is great news for gamers who have been wanting to get into the game.

StarCraft II free-to-play action will kick off later this month, Blizzard recently detailed. Several challenge-mode mini-games will also be included, with focused goals created to ease players into the basics of multiplayer strategies.

StarCraft 2 itself is a sci-fi space opera about three warring races facing an intergalactic threat, played as a real-time strategy game.

Those who already own StarCraft II will receive a special Eidolon Ghost skin and three portraits commemorating their founder's status in the game. Just be sure to log in sometime between November 8 and December 8 to claim it.

StarCraft II launched for PC in 2010.
