Trump Waives Jones Act for Puerto Rico Relief

A mountain of food, water and other vital supplies has arrived in Puerto Rico's main Port of San Juan.

All of that remains in very short supply a week later, and now many are wondering how long it will take for life to return to normal in the USA territory of 3.4 million. People in the tight-knit community immediately began to check on the well-being of their neighbors and share water and other supplies (many opened beers or cooked meat before it spoiled in refrigerators without power).

Mr Trump has been criticised over his seemingly lax response to the disaster in Puerto Rico, compared the federal response to hurricanes in Texas and Florida, with even Barbadian singer Rihanna tweeting the President urging him to not to "let your people die like this". "It's old electrical grid, which was in awful shape, was devastated". He and his family spent a few days praying they were OK.

The new developments come as Florida Governor Rick Scott is set to meet with Puerto Rico's Governor Ricardo Rossello to talk about Hurricane Maria relief efforts. Communications are spotty and roads are clogged with debris. It could be weeks before electricity is restored.

"Puerto Rican communities across MA have also been traumatized by images of destruction and by fears that loved ones there are in danger".

National Guard Soldiers arrive at Barrio Obrero in Santurce on September 24. Power, food, fuel and other supplies are all in short supply on the island.

There are several thousand USA federal employees in Puerto Rico helping with the recovery effort.

So was the response to citizens of Puerto Rico quick enough? The destruction of properties, of flattened structures, of families without homes, of debris everywhere.

"The situation on the island is perilous and reporting on the sustained damage and dangers is hard at best", Esri Industry Manager Ryan Lanclos said in a statement.

A $73 billion debt crisis has left agencies like the state power company broke.

The future looks grim as it's feared that financial losses from the storm and the inability of young people to find work will perpetuate economic turmoil. Puerto Rico is now suffering food shortages and is at risk of disease outbreak, and both local and federal officials are pressuring the Trump administration to dramatically ramp up its efforts. Leyla Santiago, who was born and raised in Puerto Rico, has been on the island since Irma hit earlier this month.

Someone had already strung a cable over the 100-yard stretch of river so people could hold on as they crossed in search of supplies. Puerto Rico's population dropped by 8 percent from 2010 through the middle of 2016.
