DirecTV reportedly offering NFL Sunday Ticket refunds to fans angered by protests

In the wake of the national anthem protests in the NFL, which ramped up considerably over the weekend, DirecTV is reportedly allowing some disgruntled football fans to cancel their Sunday Ticket packages with refunds.

The network hosts NFL Sunday Ticket, which is a package that allows viewers to watch any game around the league. One DirecTV representative told The Journal that only customers with specific plans could get refunds, another said customers could get prorated refunds for the remainder of the season, a third said full refunds were available while a fourth said no refunds were being offered.

The Wall Street Journal also spoke with some DirecTV subscribers who indicated the same.

Sunday Ticket earns $1.5 billion a year in licensing revenue, the Journal said.

"I honestly didn't think I'd get a refund", Hoffman told WSJ.

Once the season starts, fans usually are stuck with their subscription, but AT&T, which owns DirecTV, chose to change the policy due to the sensitivity of the issue.

ESPN later reported that a source confirmed that DirecTV will exempt subscribers angered by the league-wide protests from the company's no-cancellation policy.

More than 200 players from different teams kneeled during the national anthem on Sunday, Sept. 24, in response to President Donald Trump's demand that NFL team owners should fire players who disrespect the anthem and what it represents.

Roughly 180 players opted not to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the NFL's Week 3, including three teams whose rosters did not come to the sidelines for the song.
