Uber hunts City grandee to drive bid for London reprieve

It was also not satisfied with Uber's approach to reporting serious criminal offences, its approach to how medical certificates are obtained, and its approach to how Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are obtained.

London police complained this year that the app, which is backed by Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, was either not disclosing, or taking too long to report, serious crimes including sexual assaults and that this put the public at risk.

Sadiq Khan, the London Mayor who chairs the TfL board, has sought to defend the decision, arguing that Uber has not demonstrated that it can "play by the rules".

The city's transportation agency, Transport for London, said last week it would not renew Uber's license when it expires September 30, citing a lack of corporate responsibility and concern for public security. In May 2017, TfL granted the company a four month extension to continue operating in London.

Earlier today, Fred Jones, UK head of cities for Uber said that it was "just not clear for us what [TfL's] concerns might be" and described how they were only informed of the decision five minutes before it was announced on Friday. He adds, "On behalf of everyone at Uber globally, I apologise for the mistakes we've made".

A poll carried out among 1,000 Londoners found many were shocked and dismayed at the ruling which came after Transport for London found Uber not to be "a fit and proper" private hire business. A recent petition has reached over 600,000 signatures to bring Uber back to London and disregard what Transport for London has ruled (4).

He said when a driver signed up to the app, Uber made sure they had all the correct paperwork from TfL and that Uber did not carry out background checks itself.

According to the BBC, Khan welcomed Khosrowshahi's apology.

Meanwhile the move has sparked concern over the plight of Uber's London drivers, many of whom have auto finance deals in place with third-party companies.

Nigel Mackay, a lawyer at Leigh Day law firm, which has challenged Uber over its working practices, also indicated Uber's appeal "could go all the way to the Supreme Court".

His register of interests shows he remains a member of the GMB, the union representing many black cab taxi drivers and which has led a campaign against Uber.

Past year the United Kingdom courts ruled that Uber drivers should be considered employees, forming a landmark decision that could have implications for other gig economy services.

Uber is far from alone in this shake-up, but it does stand out for its success in what is now referred to as a 'gig' economy - individuals using technology to facilitate paid tasks.

It cited instances in which Uber failed to report serious criminal offences as well as its penchant to deceive regulators in its decision to not renew its license when it expires on September 30.
