Ryanair cancellations leaving passengers up in the air

The airline said it was preparing for up to €20 million in compensation claims and €5 million in lost fares as a result of the cancellations, but analysts estimated the total cost could be higher.

"This is clearly a mess up, I take responsibility for the mess up and I have to clear it up". By cancelling less than 2% of our flying programme over the next six weeks, (until our winter schedule starts in early November) we can improve the operational resilience of our schedules and restore punctuality to our annualised target of 90%. It also faces paying compensation of 250 euros ($300) per traveler for flights canceled on less than two weeks' notice.

While Ryanair admitted that it "messed up" the planning of staff holidays, reports said the airline had been impacted by recruitment issues after losing a number of pilots to rival carrier Norwegian Air.

The cancellations could leave hundreds of thousands of passengers in the lurch, undermining efforts by Europe's biggest discount airline to improve its image and woo more lucrative customers.

One woman said her flight being cancelled had caused chaos for her as she had to hire a van to drive dozens of guests to a wedding in Italy.

Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary has admitted the cancellation of flights due to pilot holidays is "a mess".

Passengers have accused the airline of treating them "appallingly" and demanded it publishes a full list of the flights to be cancelled over the next six weeks.

Rory Boland, travel editor at consumer watchdog Which?, comments: "It's essential that Ryanair release a full list of flights that will be affected so that passengers have as much time as possible to make alternate arrangements".

An update on Sunday night revealed details of cancellations up to and including this Wednesday.

Passengers are entitled to assistance and compensation, if the disruption was within an airline's control.

Shares of Ryanair are down 1.25% in London.

Airlines must also offer you meals, refreshments, and hotel accommodation as appropriate whilst you wait for a rearranged flight for both delays and cancellation.

The fall in Ryanair's punctuality below 80 percent compared to an average of 89 percent in the three months to the end of June.
