CAA says 10000 consumers could be Equifax hack victims

The disclosure suggests that Equifax may have been slow to take basic steps to secure its most sensitive data, and will likely add to calls for stronger oversight of an industry whose information in the hands of criminals can enable the worst kinds of identity theft and fraud.

The breach, which is believed to have occurred in May and discovered by company personnel a month later, led to the sale of large amounts of shares from senior company officials, including its President of U.S. Information Solutions, the Chief Financial Officer, and the President of Workforce Solutions. "However, in light of the intense public interest and the potential impact of this matter, I can confirm that FTC staff is investigating the Equifax data breach", spokesman Peter Kaplan said in a brief email statement.

Shares of the company's stock plummeted from 142.72 on September 7, when the hack was announced, to 98.99 at close of trading yesterday.

The Federal Trade Commission is warning Americans about scammers posing as representatives from Equifax. Mark Warner sent a detailed letter to the acting head of the FTC calling for an investigation into Equifax's handling of the breach.

"The Equifax data compromise was due to their failure to install the security updates provided in a timely manner", the Apache Software Foundation said Thursday in a statement on its website. They tumbled to a more than two-year low on Thursday after the company confirmed a fixable web server vulnerability was exploited in the hack, but the stock later recovered somewhat. It doesn't take a security expert to know that's a bad idea. Apache Struts software is especially time-consuming to update because each application needs to be fixed individually.

"Even if you do not conduct financial transactions online, your information may be at risk", said Wiessmann. "CAA did not handle or retain any of the information provided to Equifax", said Ian Jack, CAA managing director of communications and government relations.

More recently, Equifax's cybersecurity has come under fire.

Beware of email and telephone scams related to the data breach.

"Equifax has been intensely investigating the scope of the intrusion with the assistance of a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to determine what information was accessed and who has been impacted", said Equifax, in its progress report revealing the issue. "So data security and how we go about ensuring that is something we spend a lot of time and effort on".
