Mass Evacuations in Russian Cities Continue After Bomb Threats

At least 10,000 people have been evacuated from shopping centres, railway stations and universities in Moscow over a string of bomb threats, according to local reports.

All alerts have proved to be hoaxes and the authorities have urged the public to stay calm, the BBC said yesterday.

"Evacuation has been conducted at 30 facilities, with a total of 20,000 people taken outside".

Since September 11 dozens of schools, universities, malls, railway stations, airports and government offices have been evacuated and inspected by law enforcement in big cities all over Russian Federation - from Kaliningrad in the West to Vladivostok in the Far East.

The threats in Saratov region were made anonymously through internet voice calls, the Federal Security Service's (FSB) regional branch said Wednesday.

Several universities and hotels were reportedly evacuated as well.

Bomb threats were also issued for Moscow's three railway stations - Kazanskiy, Leningradskiy and Kievskiy.

"Each call is being checked". A Reuters TV cameraman said he saw police with sniffer dogs checking the building. Sheremetyevo airport, the capital's busiest, tightened security after a threat, Interfax reported. Social media accounts show bemused crowds milling passively outside evacuated buildings, and there have been no reports of disturbances of public order. But Mr Klintsevich and other officials said yesterday that the source could have been in Ukraine.

Russian Federation has been hit by militant attacks, including a bombing on the St Petersburg metro in April in which 16 people died.
