AL power crews to help restoration efforts in FL

Ultimately, crews from fifteen of Alabama's rural electric cooperatives are being sent to help five Florida electric cooperatives with power restoration in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Crews from 30 states and Canada are in Florida or on the way to help restore the power. "Additional BWEMC crews will swapped out later if needed. We are proud of our crew who volunteered to restore power at Excelsior EMC as well as all of our linemen who keep NNEC's members' lights on". The Okefenoke Rural Electric Membership Corporation along the Florida-Georgia line reported that 95 percent of its electric system was knocked out by the storm.

Missouri took part in daily conference calls among electric cooperatives that were expected to need help and those that should be out of harm's way.

Missouri's electric cooperatives are no strangers to helping out in hurricane zones. Electric co-ops in Louisiana and MS have returned the favor, helping Missouri electric cooperatives restore power after the ice storms of 2007 and 2009. The state organization is coordinating the response by Minnesota cooperatives.
