Pakistan rejects BRICS Summit declaration, says defence minister

Minister for Defence Khurram Dastgir Tuesday rejected the declaration of the BRICS Summit in China naming terrorist groups in the region and said there was no safe haven for terrorists on Pakistan's soil.
During the visit, the foreign minister will hold meetings with China's State Councillor for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Asif's visit will be "another important event between the two sides which will further the cooperation consensus reached between the two leaders, deepen political cooperation centered on the China Pakistan Economic corridor (CPEC) and promote coordination and communication on global and regional affairs", he said.
Leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa condemned "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations" at the 9th BRICS Summit in China on Monday.
This comes after Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi last month said there has to be a political settlement in Afghanistan and that US President Donald Trump's new war strategy will fail.
He believes China has economic interests in the region and "needs stability in Pakistan as it builds out its China-Pakistan Economic Corridor [CPEC] in that country".
It said that the significance of the BRICS declaration that included a condemnation of violence in Afghanistan and a specific mention of the Afghan Taliban, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad "should not be underestimated".
Of the BRICS members, India and China are the only ones that border terrorism-linked Pakistan.
Pakistan's news web portals are, however, carrying reports filed by global news agencies such as Reuters on the important change in the stance of the five-nation bloc whose leaders met in China. India has always been demanding action against the terror groups.
"We strongly condemn terrorist attacks resulting in death of innocent Afghan nationals". China's endorsement of BRICS declaration, which is also seen as a significant diplomatic victory for India, was sharply criticised by a Chinese think tank, saying that it would strain close relations between China and Pakistan.
"All this said, I don't think this will lead to any policy shifts in Pakistan".
Earlier, China had ruled out any discussions on Pakistan's counter-terrorism efforts at the BRICS summit.
