May vows to fight on at next election

Prime Minister Theresa May said she wanted to continue as Britain's leader beyond the next parliamentary election, not due until 2022, dismissing expectations she could stand down after Brexit as early as 2019.

Mrs May said: "I'm in this for the long term because there's a long-term challenge for the UK".

"It is my intention not just to deliver a good Brexit deal for the United Kingdom but also to ensure that "global Britain" can take its place in the world, trading around the world and that we deal with those injustices domestically that we need to do to ensure that stronger, more global but also fairer Britain for the future".

"Yes, there has been an very bad lot of speculation about my future which has no basis in it whatsoever", she told Dinnen, adding: "I'm in this for the long term".

"I'm in this for the long term", she added.

But she rejected the talk of her standing down or being replaced in Number 10.

The idea that she now wants to spend another five years as party boss will come as a surprise to some of her MPs.

Britain and Japan are aiming to put in place a bilateral trade agreement "pretty much immediately" after Brexit, a government source said on Thursday, as Prime Minister Theresa May tries to reassure businesses and politicians during a visit to Tokyo.

Speaking on the first day of a three-day diplomatic trip to Japan, Mrs May said she was aware of the rumours that she could be replaced as the leader of the Conservative Party.

The Global Times, an offshoot of Communist party mouthpiece the People's Daily, has made an art of ribbing Conservative prime ministers.

The result sparked speculation of a leadership challenge.

May arrived in Japan on Wednesday to discuss a potential post-Brexit trade deal with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
