Olympic 5000m finalist David Torrence found dead at 31

David Torrence, a 31-year-old Olympic runner, was found dead Monday morning in a swimming pool in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The cause of death is now unknown, and police are investigating the scene after the runner was found at the bottom of the Center Court Condominiums pool, according to The Arizona Republic. Torrence, whose mother was born in Peru and has dual citizenship, competed for Peru in the 5,000-meter at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 and finished 15th.

According to the police, they are not treating the death as suspicious.

"Firefighters removed the male subject from the pool and he was pronounced deceased", Sgt.

Authorities say there are no obvious signs of foul play in the death of David Torrence, who represented Peru in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

No one was more dedicated to their running than @David_Torrence. "He got 100% out of himself every day".

Torrence was popular in the close-knit community of pro runners, and other elites quickly took to social media to express their shock and sadness.

During Torrence's lifetime he accomplished a long list of achievements, including setting an American record in the indoor 1,000 meters, which still stands, and as a previous Nike athlete, he won numerous USA titles on the track and road. He was the two-time champion of that event and a good friend of Merber's.
