Halep still can't solve Sharapova after loss

Perhaps appropriately dressed in black as it had been 19 months since her last grand slam appearance, Maria Sharapova took NY by storm on the opening night of the US Open ousting second seed Simona Halep in a marathon three-set match.

Monday was Sharapova's first Grand Slam appearance since the 2016 Australian Open, when she tested positive for the recently banned heart medication meldonium after losing to Serena Williams in the quarterfinals.

A dejected Simona Halep blamed serving struggles for her first-round defeat to Maria Sharapova at the US Open, while acknowledging she could have no complaints about the result. The US Open was her first major back due to the French Open denying her a wild card and injury forcing her out of Wimbledon qualifying. I think I give everything I had.

Yesterday saw the first round of tennis's final Grand Slam of the season kick off in NY, as the U.S. Open was finally underway.

"Some balls were really good and I couldn't even touch them", she indicated.

Having only converted 17 out of a possible 22 break points along with 64 unforced errors, the 30-year-old did, however, slam 60 winners as she eventually won in a contest that lasted two hours and 44 minutes as the crowd stood up and applauded. "She beat me six times".

Czech Karolina Pliskova, who currently sits at the top of the rankings, said: " I think it's very open now for those eight players, not for everybody.

Halep said: "Of course was a little bit like, 'How is possible again?" It also maintained her ideal 11-0 record in the first round at the U.S. Open and her 18-0 record at Arthur Ashe Stadium when playing at night. Although it looked like she might have lost her edge in the final four games of the second set, she came back in the third and won decisively. "I realised how long it had been since I played at the US Open".

"Sometimes I feel like there is a shop, like, three blocks, and three blocks is wonderful, long, and so exhausted", she said with a laugh. "My philosophy is you don't train on all of those back courts, you don't train in the early mornings, in tough conditions, just by yourself, not to want to play in the biggest matches that are in front of you".

Her opening round win revealed a side of Maria Sharapova rarely seen by the general public.

"But I think it's a little bit hard with the way that I got to world No. 1 and I'm defending now every week quite a lot of points".
